Buffett Does Lunch--EBay Bidder Pays $620K Tab

It may not be as critically acclaimed as My Dinner with Andre. But it probably won't be as pretentious, either.
We speak of a charity luncheon with Warren Buffett, the plain-spoken prairie billionaire. The chance to chat and chew with the Berkshire Hathaway (nyse: BRK.A - news - people ) chairman was auctioned via eBay (nasdaq: EBAY - news - people ), in a sale ending Thursday night at $620,100.
Putting on the platinum feedbag with Buffett: Palo Alto, Calif.-based investor Yongping Duan, more familiar to auction watchers under his eBay user name, "fastisslow." He beat out a $620,000 bid from "magicyourlife."
Maybe Duan was hungrier--his meal will cost nearly double the winning bid for last year's dining experience, which went for $351,100.
Earth's second-richest man is a big believer in philanthropy, as we've seen this month--and donates a lot more than just his time and wisdom.
Buffett, like entertainers Don Ho and Tiny Tim, is an aficionado of the ukulele; and the tycoon, whose Berkshire owns Dairy Queen, donated a specially-made, inscribed DQ uke to another charity auction.
But the wee instrument was small potatoes compared with his $31 billion gift to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. That entity is co-managed by--of course--retiring Microsoft (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people ) Chairman Bill Gates, Buffett's bridge partner and fellow concerned global citizen.
So what's for lunch? Whatever they have on the menu at the Smith & Wollensky (nasdaq: SWRG - news - people ) steakhouse in NYC. The owners of the eatery chain have donated $10,000 to the Glide Foundation, the homelessness charity benefited by the lunch auction.
One person who won't be passing the A-1 sauce: Larry Ellison. The Oracle (nasdaq: ORCL - news - people ) head reportedly bucked the trend of his peers, reneging on his $115 million donation pledge to Harvard.
Tightwads, like the shirtless and shoeless, will not be seated.
