I found this interesting...

The movie studio keeps approximately 55% of the total gross box office number. The studios also make money via DVD sales, syndication, etc. Still, there are some major bombs out in theaters right now... some of these will never be profitable, some are marginably profitable yet still disappointing. In some of these, there could still be earnouts to be paid to actors.

There are some others that I imagine are losers, but I don't have the budget info for them... these include: WAR (5.4 million), The Nanny Diaries (4.5 million), and The Last Legion (6.1 million).

Perhaps this has a little something to do with why P/E firms and hedgefunds are a little apprehensive about financing movies. To be fair, there are some big time successes (Transformers, Superbad, Bourne, Simpsons, Harry Potter, etc.) in the theater right now, too... but the movie houses generally keep the no brainer movies for themselves.
