matt, i'm going to steal that line, if you don't mind! that's great. With emphasis, i could describe how f'ing expensive it is to get the stuff outta the ground, energy, plus the fixed capital investment, not to mention the YEARS of exploration drill holes and technical expenditures. Live through it and you will gain an appreciation.
I agree with Buffett about ultimately owning the asset rather than the mine - "why do i want to buy a mine when all i'm left with is a polluted hole at the end". He values the PERPETUAL ASSET of the physical commodity, not the environmental mess or the capital intensive mining business. Similarily, he likes BRANDS, as we know, which is also a perpetual asset.
